Skoda Australia says $20K-$30K EVs are not feasible yet, brand to focus on SUVs

We might have to wait quite some time for a truly affordable EV, says Skoda Australia

Are you holding out for a cheaper electric car at a much more budget price point?

Well, Skoda Australia’s brand director Michael Irmer says that building such a car won’t be possible immediately.

“At the moment, it’s not yet feasible to make a BEV (battery-electric vehicle) on that real budget level like the $20K-$30K range”.

Skoda knows that the big area of interest is SUVs

The Volkswagen Group has announced that it will eventually build a cheaper small car – called the ID2all – for the equivalent price of around AUD$40,000.

However, it’s more likely that Skoda Australia will focus on bringing electric SUVs to local dealerships.

“SUVs are what the people want, and that goes well with the Australian buyer”.

Skoda’s future timeline for its electric models

Skoda globally has announced six EVs that could start to arrive as early as 2024, including a compact SUV, ‘Space’ large SUV, a small electric SUV and a ‘Combi’ wagon-style vehicle – very likely to be a fully-electric Octavia replacement.

“We now go full steam [ahead] with the rest of the electric range,” Mr Irmer told Chasing Cars

When asked if these future EV products will retain past nameplates, or change altogether, Irmer said that “the cars have been given new names, but it might not always be like this”.

Skoda’s “forerunner” electric car, Enyaq, is a big success overseas

Chasing Cars understands that there are wait times of around 18 months in Europe for the Skoda Enyaq SUV and Coupe. Things are clearly working well for Skoda Europe.

Most of Skoda’s range overseas has similar wait times, as the company tries to keep up with demand.

Skoda Australia will launch the Enyaq in both coupe and SUV bodystyles in Australia during 2024.

Two specifications will be available, a iV 85 and a iV RS. The iV 85 will use a rear-mounted electric motor with 210kW of power and will be powered by a 82kWh battery pack.
