BYD Atto 3 2023: five-star ANCAP rating awarded to Chinese electric car, but there’s a catch

The five-star ANCAP rating only applies to those BYD Atto 3s built after 21 November 2022 or those examples that have been updated

BYD’s Atto 3 electric car has received a five-star rating from Australian safety agency ANCAP.

The news comes after New Zealand-supplied Atto 3s also received a five-star rating.

The Australian rating applies to standard and extended-range variants of the Atto 3 that were manufactured after 21 November 2022.

However, the rating also applies for Atto 3 vehicles built from May 2022 that received safety updates from BYD to improve the centre seating top tether restraint anchorage, as well as disabling the use of the front seat for small children by removing the airbag disabling switch.

The Atto 3 scored well across the four key areas of testing, including 91 percent for adult occupant protection, 84 percent for child occupant protection, 69 percent for vulnerable road users and 80 percent for safety assistance.

ANCAP has stated that any BYD Atto 3 that has not been updated or built after 21 November 2022 is unrated by the safety agency.
